The Two Types of Staking
Bittensor has two completely different ways to stake. Most people do not understand the difference, and it costs them money.
1. Root Staking (Safe)
You stake TAO directly on Root (Subnet 0). Your TAO stays as TAO. You cannot lose your principal. Returns are modest and shrinking by design — the protocol gradually reduces root rewards over time.
2. Alpha Staking (Risk + Reward)
You swap TAO for a subnet's alpha token through a liquidity pool, then stake that alpha to a validator on that subnet. This is what most people do when they "stake on SN1 Apex" or any other subnet.
How the Alpha/TAO Pool Works
Every subnet has a liquidity pool — a reserve of TAO and alpha tokens. When you stake:
- You send TAO into the pool
- You receive alpha tokens at the current exchange rate
- You lose some value to slippage (pool friction)
- Your alpha gets staked to a validator
When you unstake:
- Your alpha gets converted back to TAO through the pool
- The exchange rate may be higher or lower than when you entered
- You lose some value to slippage again
What Determines the Exchange Rate?
The alpha/TAO rate is driven by supply and demand:
- More people staking (buying alpha) → alpha price goes UP → your position grows
- More people unstaking (selling alpha) → alpha price goes DOWN → your position shrinks
This is why our Staking Advisor tracks sentiment and buy/sell pressure — they directly predict whether the alpha price will rise or fall.
How Emissions Work (Taoflow)
Since November 2025, Bittensor uses a flow-based emission model:
- Emissions are based on net TAO inflow to each subnet (staking minus unstaking)
- Uses a 30-day exponential moving average — no quick gaming
- Subnets with negative net flow get zero emissions
- Distribution per tempo (~72 min): 18% subnet owner, 41% miners, 41% validators + stakers
Root Claim: Swap vs Keep
This setting controls what happens to your staking rewards:
- Swap (default) — Your alpha dividends are automatically converted to TAO and restaked on root. Safer. You accumulate TAO steadily.
- Keep — Your alpha dividends stay as alpha on the subnet. Higher potential if the subnet is growing, but you are exposed to alpha price drops.
You can set this on tao.app under "Change Root Claim Type."
A Real Example: What Happened to Us
We staked 265.74 TAO on SN1 Apex on April 22, 2026. Six days later:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Started with | 265.74 TAO |
| Current value | 262.76 TAO |
| Alpha earned | +31 alpha/day (going up) |
| Alpha price change | -2% per week (going down) |
| Net result | Lost 2.98 TAO (~) |
We earned alpha rewards every day. But the alpha/TAO exchange rate dropped faster than we earned. Net loss.
How to Pick the Right Subnet for Staking
Based on our analysis of all 128 subnets using TaoStats data, here is what actually predicts staking returns:
| Factor | Predictive? | Win Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Extreme Greed sentiment | YES | 100% (3/3) |
| Greed sentiment | YES | 78% (36/46) |
| Fear sentiment | YES (inverse) | 0% (0/7) |
| Buy pressure > Sell | Moderate | +6.2% avg |
| Net TAO flow | Weak | No clear edge |
The takeaway: Sentiment is the strongest predictor. Stake on subnets in Greed. Avoid subnets in Fear. Check sentiment before you stake.
