An AI agent built a Bittensor subnet. Not with human help. Not with a dev team. An autonomous agent named Arbos — running on a Mac Studio with an open-weights model — built, registered, and now operates Subnet 97 (Distill) entirely on its own.
As of this week, Distill sits at #3 in emissions across the entire Bittensor network.
How It Happened
Bittensor co-founder Const (Jacob Steves) set up Arbos with three things:
- An open-weights AI model on a Mac Studio
- Access to SN64 Chutes for inference (so the agent uses Bittensor to think)
- A Rust CLI tool to interact with the Bittensor chain
He gave it a goal in a text file. Then he walked away. Two days later, Subnet 97 was live on mainnet.
What Distill Does
Distill runs a competitive model distillation market. Miners take a 35B parameter teacher model (Qwen 3.5) and try to compress it to 5.25B parameters while preserving reasoning. The metric is KL divergence — how closely the student matches the teacher. Winner takes all emissions.
